Returning to Shinkai for chirashi bowl and more! Tried seared sea bass & spicy salmon roll too! Chirashi bowl was excellent like the last time! Love the freshness and the high quality foods!
This place is my go-to for my sashimi cravings. It's not your typical fusion Japanese with a bunch of rolls on the menu. Lunch menu is such a great deal. Everything is quality.
Tried Shinkai Sushi for the first time and it did not disappoint! Their lunch prices are so good and all the fish they have are extremely fresh. I was impressed with their variety of fish and how high quality every single item I tried was! Their chirashi bowl comes with huge, thick cuts of sashimi and sushi rice that was cooked to perfection. Their sides such as the seaweed and octopus was just as good as their sashimi. At only $27 for this set, it makes a great and affordable lunch. They also have Omakase which was really impressive. Their omakase lunch price is $125/person and comes with over 15 courses. This included toro, trumpet fish, and other delicious dishes! The chefs were interactive, fun, and skilled. I highly recommend this sushi spot and will be coming back.
Ordered: - 2x salmon ikura bowls (5/5): comes with spicy tuna, seaweed, lots of salmon, and topped off with some ikura! This is our regular order whenever we visit Shinkai, and it has never disappointed. We love the quality of the salmon here. - Amberjack (5/5): Super delicious, bit fatty yet still a bit crunchy, and the wasabi and soy sauce already on the nigiri completes this perfect piece of sushi. - Red snapper (3.5/5): This nigiri had a crunchy fish texture, which in our opinion is a plus. Sadly, most of the flavor was from the yuzu garnish on the fish, which we were a bit disappointed about. Overall (5/5): Shinkai is an underrated local gem that my girlfriend and I love to visit. Service is always friendly and quick, food is delicious and fresh with generous portions, and overall a really good spot in an area with not as many traditional Japanese restaurants that specialize in nigiri/sashimi instead of rolls. It's also usually pretty quiet here which is our favorite type of vibe.
I noticed I haven't left a review since I last came here for the Shinkai omakase in April with my parents and husband. Since we've been going to more Michelin star restaurants and fine dining tasting menus around LA, I'm reminded of how great of a deal this place is especially for the price of under $200 per person. Omakases usually run in the $400 range now per person especially with the higher number of courses. At Shinkai, we had at least 17 courses and each one was high quality and delicious. I also love how we don't have to trek all the way to DTLA, Hollywood, or the Westside for quality sushi/sashimi. I feel lucky this sushi gastronomic experience restaurant is just less than 5 mins away!
$125 omakase was well worth the price! I'm honestly surprised this place hasn't showed up on more best sushi restaurant lists, maybe that's for the best haha. It's definitely known in the older Asian SGV population. Chef was friendly and speaks Mandarin so if you want somewhere to bring your parents, this is the place! He also is willing to sear the fish, so also good for older generation that don't want to eat raw fish (ok maybe that's why this place isn't in any best sushi lists). Fish is fresh, and we had some interesring cuts on the omakase, in addition to some wagyu, and soup, and other dishes (so it's not a bunch of nigiri cuz that gets boring after a while). Highly recommend! Free parking in the structure of the building.
A sushi lover's dream. Exceptional quality and service. This was my first visit to this fantastic restaurant, and it definitely won't be my last. The sushi was incredibly fresh and flavorful, with a buttery smoothness that instantly melts in your mouth, a sure sign of topnotch sushi. Every dish surpassed expectations, easily outshining most sushi spots in the area. The kinmedai was especially remarkable, with its melt in your mouth texture, and the oysters had a delicate braininess that perfectly captures the essence of the ocean. As for the hirame (white fish), served whole with its skin, it was simply divine, a true highlight of the meal. Not only was the food exceptional, but the service was also immaculate, adding to the overall experience. It's worth every penny, and I can't recommend it enough. If you are a sushi lover, this place is a must visit. Don't miss out ... Just saying.
The place is known for their lunch specials. Came most recently here for dinner where prices were a bit more but no wait. The uni pasta was a small portion but very rich in cream and butter so it was filling when eaten along with a seaweed salad and soft shell crab appetizer. The flavor of uni was light, probably won't order this item again and will stick with the sashimi. My friend was very pleased with her premium sashimi. The slices were thicker than most places and the freshness that you needed in sushi was there. Good variety and they offer to make the sweet shrimp head either deep fried or in a soup for you. Parking is free in the back, shared with other businesses.
